Weight Loss with
GLP-1 Medication
GLP-1s have a mixed reputation. They are often looked down upon as a crutch, however for some people who have metabolic abnormalities where changes in diet and fitness do not produce results, a GLP-1 can play a role in helping achieve better outcomes. GLP-1 is a peptide comprised of amino acids, with a version naturally occurring in the body. The prescription version acts upon the receptors to help regulate appetite, slow the movement of food from the stomach and through the intestinal tract and to normalize insulin dynamics. This causes you to feel full sooner and stay full longer. GLP-1s should be used with diet and lifestyle changes for best results.
Setting Realistic Expectations
Is Critical
Weight change pace: No more than 0.5 – 1 lb per week is desirable when the medication is paired with a protein-forward, whole-foods diet and a progressive exercise plan. Faster weight loss can indicate insufficient caloric intake and/or muscle wasting.
- Lifestyle is non-negotiable. GLP-1s amplify—never replace—nutrition, resistance training, sleep hygiene, and stress management. Any time you lose weight, you lose both fat and muscle mass. Adequate strength training helps to minimize muscle loss.
- Maintenance is lifelong. Stopping abruptly often leads to rebound hunger and the return of the underlying metabolic abnormality which led to weight gain in the first place.
- Potential side effects: Nausea, fullness, reflux, and rare pancreatitis or gallbladder issues remain class-wide risks. Our slow-titration schedule helps minimize side effects.
The Hormone Center Process, Step-by-Step
————
- Baseline analysis (comprehensive metabolic panel, A1c, insulin, CRP, thyroid)
- Goal setting (weight, visceral-fat %, inflammation markers)
- Slowly titrated doses with six week check-ins
- Reassessments at Weeks 6 and 12 – adjust dose, hold, or pivot to maintenance
- Quarterly monitoring – labs, body composition, side-effect survey
- Long-term maintenance – smallest dose that preserves gains
GLP-1 Medications FAQs
1. What are GLP-1 medications?
They are prescription injections or tablets that copy a natural gut peptide (GLP-1). They help control blood sugar, curb hunger, and can lead to weight loss by slowing stomach emptying, signaling the brain that you are full sooner, and helping the pancreas release the right amount of insulin after meals.
2. What can they help with?
GLP-1s mainly help with type 2 diabetes and weight-related issues. Doctors also use them (off-label) to support heart, kidney, and liver health, calm inflammation, and even boost immunity.
3. When will I notice a difference?
Blood sugar often improves in 2–4 weeks. Weight-loss usually begins after 8 weeks (sometimes longer). Everyone’s timeline is a little different.
4. Will the weight come back if I stop?
Weight can return if healthy eating, activity, and other lifestyle changes are not in place, or if underlying insulin resistance or metabolic conditions remain.
5. Is a GLP-1 medication right for me?
Most patients qualify if their BMI is 30 + or 27 + with a weight-related condition (like high blood pressure). It’s also important that in conjunction with the GLP-1 medication that you are willing to make lifestyle changes to your diet and exercise program for sustained success.
6. Any common side effects?
The most common side effects are abdominal issues like nausea, occasional vomiting, diarrhea, feeling full fast and loss of appetite. We like to start at a low dose and increase slowly to keep side effects to a minimum.
7. Who should think twice?
Let your provider know if you or family member have medullary thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, type 1 diabetes, are pregnant or nursing, recently delivered, have heavy alcohol use, or an eating disorder.
8. Will insurance help with the cost?
It is unlikely to cover the medications unless you have diabetes, but there are several weight related conditions that may qualify with some insurance plans. Most insurance plans want a prior authorization (PA). We have found most appeals to be futile, so we will not submit appeals once you have been denied coverage.
9. What if my plan denies coverage for the medication?
You can either pay cash (around $1,000/month) at a commercial pharmacy or we can work with you to determine alternatives.
